As a research associate at the Institute, Sarah Wolf manages and coordinates projects in the areas of sustainable nutrition and agriculture. She also raises awareness of sustainable agriculture and nutrition among stakeholders and interest groups through public relations work.
After obtaining a degree in social pedagogy, Sarah Wolf completed her PhD in ecology at the University of Bern in 2019. At Agroscope Zurich, and as part of a postdoctoral position at the Institute of Plant Sciences at the University of Bern, she conducted research on methods of pest control utilising natural predators.
For Sarah Wolf, this beneficial interaction of different plant and animal species is of particular interest in ecologically sustainable agriculture and forms the basis of all her work as a scientist. To understand the connections between nature and agriculture and to intelligently utilise these connections is essential in the production of healthy food.
“As an ecologist I am fascinated by how organisms interact with each other and with their abiotic environment. This interaction forms the foundation for our planet’s diversity and hence also for our food. If this is to continue to be the case everywhere, now and in the future, greater care is needed in food and agriculture. Producing enough food for everyone without this impacting adversely on other organisms and ecosystems will be one of the biggest challenges facing future generations. It calls for a rethink in nutrition and in agricultural production. A greater appreciation of food and of the work of farmers is an important step in this direction. The world can do without humans, but humans can’t do without their environment.”
