As a research associate at the Institute of Agroecology, Sonja Siegl is responsible for calculating carbon footprints of agricultural holdings and for sustainability analyses. She is the scientific project manager for the “climate farmer” (KlimaBauer) project established by the Andechser Molkerei Scheitz dairy plant, which won the 2021 German environmental management award (Deutscher Umweltmanagementpreis) for its climate-friendly production methods.
After studying food and biotechnology at BOKU in Vienna, she completed a doctorate in the field of environmental biotechnology on the subject of life cycle assessments of green electricity from biomass. She then took on consultancy work in the fields of environmental management, energy and sustainability for 7.5 years, first in development cooperation in northern Mozambique, then at the Viennese consultancy "denkstatt & enertec". Since 2020, Sonja Siegl has enriched the Institute of Agroecology with her expertise.
"he sustainability issue and especially the reduction of harmful environmental effects of our current lifestyles have been on my mind for a long time. Transport and energy as well as our current agrifood system are among the main drivers of environmental damage in this regard. Following Peter Drucker’s maxim “If you can't measure it, you can't manage it,” I like to focus my work on quantifying environmental effects, be that greenhouse gas emissions or sustainability as an overall issue, in order to be able to make agricultural systems more sustainable."
