As agricultural advisor and research associate at the Institute of Agroecology, Stefan Schürmann is responsible for farm advisory and the participatory advancement of agricultural systems with a focus on sustainable livestock husbandry.
After completing his Bachelor's degree in agronomy at the School of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences HAFL in Zollikofen in 2005, Stefan went on to manage a farm in Zambia from 2006 to 2009, developing it further based on organic principles. After returning to Switzerland, he continued his commitment to organic agriculture, first as an assistant at the Bio Suisse secretariat in Basel (2010-2011) and since 2011 as a consultant at the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture in Frick. As he also manages his own organic farm in Altwis, his particular strength when it comes to agricultural development is that he is rooted in actual practice.
"Agroecology is a common denominator across the different forms of agriculture. We are now in a process of change towards sustainable systems that are operable into the future. As a society, we have a responsibility to reshape our farming and food culture."
