Agroecology Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein is a country that offers a high quality of life as well as scenic beauty. However, the challenges of our time are transnational in nature. The climate in Liechtenstein is changing too, biodiversity is dwindling and many people are malnourished. In order to maintain the existing quality of life, the agrifood system is one of the systems that need to change.
Agroecology aims at using the natural resource base on which our lives depend − soil, water, air, natural diversity − in a sustainable way. Actions to achieve this objective are not limited to the agricultural land base. Instead, agroecology needs and creates a new yet old connection between farmers and the people who eat what the farmers produce, so all of us.
By adapting our value chains and consumption habits in such a way that we consume less, we can reconcile the conflicting objectives of improved agricultural yields and reduced environmental impacts. In other words, sustainable nutrition is a prerequisite for sustainable agriculture. Moreover, good food is good for all of us.
With the Agroecology Liechtenstein project, farming families and consumers want to join forces, try out new things together, rediscover the old, and establish regional marketing channels that are characterised by appreciation and fairness. The farmers want to open up their farms and invite the public to rediscover farming.
The project has three components: (1) "the Bionetz" (organic network), our network of pioneering agroecological farms, (2) "the Feldfreunde" (friends of the field), an association established by and for all those who appreciate good food, and (3) "the Liechtensteiner Weiderinder" (Liechtenstein pastured cattle) project, our approach to the agroecological use of meadows and pastures. Our aim is to build an agroecological system in and for the benefit of Liechtenstein in a joint process with farmers, consumers, processors, citizens, children and educators, traders, teachers, politicians and all the stakeholders we invite to participate.
